Thread painting embroideries.
My embroidery passion is thread painting. This form of stitching can create the most intricate and detailed artworks. I love it’s freedom and especially enjoy the textures and effects I can achieve with just a straight stitch.
Blue Beetle. I embroidered this purely because of the colour. I loved finding as many blues and greens as I could to make this fantastic insect come to life in embroidery. Long and short stitch in stranded cottons with a tag inspired by Livingstone's original paper labels.
Stanley. Stanley sparrow was a very chatty sparrow that would sit in my front garden on a hedge and would not stop chattering. I took lots of photos of him and decided that a flowery Liberty print background was perfect for him. Long and short stitch in stranded cotton on tana lawn fabric, with Indian ink details.
Lockdown Wild Rose. During lockdown I walked on a local heath. It was full of the most beautiful wild roses. The very first thread painting embroidery I stitched was a wild rose, so I thought it would be an interesting project to relook at . I decided to add a more three dimensional centre to it and this is the result. Wired stamens , french knots and tiny antique Italian glass beads.
A graffiti thread painting with a quote from Shakespeare, an Agatha Christie Book title and relevance for stitchers!! Long and short, satin and stem stitch in stranded cottons, metallic thread on a printed cotton background.
This apple was a step by step project that I embroidered for Stitch Magazine. It features felt padding under the thread painting and a wired leaf. It is a good introduction to embroidering a round object.
An embroidered goldcrest thread painting. This little bird would often be in the conifer tree in my garden, after managing to get a good photograph of him I embroidered him for my parents golden wedding anniversary. Their initials and the date are hidden in the foliage.
This is a close up of an embroidery that was accepted and subsequently sold at The Broderers Embroidery exhibition in 2025. It is a mixed media embroidery piece and is a part of a lichen that I photographed in St James's Park, London.
A long tailed tit embroidery.
Wild Rose. My first thread painting project. This wild rose was my first attempt at thread painting, it daunted me somewhat , but by the time I got to the last petal I was converted. Thread painting was for me! Long and short stitch in stranded cottons on a flat silk back ground.
